PEC members want uninterrupted electricity, so we do all we can to safely keep the electricity flowing. Our reliability is enhanced by:
- Making line integrity a priority. We visually inspect and remotely monitor the electric lines, upgrading and improving them continuously.
- Activating an Emergency Operations Plan when we anticipate major electrical interruptions from extreme weather. When this plan is activated, all employees are on alert, offices are staffed around the clock, and normal operations are suspended.
- Restoring or sustaining power during power interruptions by transporting our mobile transformers (70-ton portable substations) to the nearest appropriate substation. Once energized, mobile transformers take over temporarily to distribute the electricity that our members need.
- Our Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) team’s monitoring of PEC’s electric distribution system 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Using mapping and power restoration software in computers networked to SCADA to pinpoint locations and analyze data from members and field employees.
- Preventing problems before they occur with active pole inspection and tree care programs. Tree branches touching lines are a leading cause of power interruptions, so we work with communities and members proactively to trim and care for trees. Read more about our tree care program in our Services section.
- Anticipating future growth with a comprehensive system design and backup plans.
- Using remote sectionalizing devices to contain line problems, such as those caused by lightning strikes or animals contacting the lines, and thereby prevent power interruptions.
