ALERT: PEC members targeted in phone scam
PEC will never ask for payment using a prepaid card
PEC members are being targeted by telephone in a scam which threatens service disconnection and instructs them to call a phone number with an 866 area code to pay by prepaid card. The 866 phone number connects to a recording that mimics the PEC automated phone system, including options to report outages and make payments.
This phone number is not a valid PEC phone number and is a gateway to a scam. Members are warned not to call this number and especially not to make payments to this number or provide any information to a person at this number. Members receiving suspicious phone calls should verify the call by contacting PEC toll-free at 888-554-4732.
Member services agents report that the scam appears to target business owners, but all PEC members need to be wary when contacted by someone claiming to represent the cooperative.
