PEC members are being targeted by telephone in a scam which threatens service disconnection and instructs them to call a phone number with an 866 area code to pay by prepaid card. The 866 phone number connects to a recording that mimics the PEC automated phone system, including options to report outages and make payments.
This phone number is not a valid PEC phone number and is a gateway to a scam. Members are warned not to call this number and especially not to make payments to this number or provide any information to a person at this number. Members receiving suspicious phone calls should verify the call by contacting PEC toll-free at 888-554-4732.
Member services agents report that the scam appears to target business owners, but all PEC members need to be wary when contacted by someone claiming to represent the cooperative.
Remember: PEC will never call to threaten immediate disconnection over the phone, and we will never request payment by prepaid card. Verify all suspicious phone calls by contacting us at the number printed on your bill: 888-554-4732.
