ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday
Purchase certain appliances tax free May 29-31
Looking to upgrade your appliances and make your home more energy efficient? This Memorial Day weekend, in addition to the appliance sales most stores run for the holiday, you can also purchase these items tax-free. That’s because May 29-31 is the ENERGY STAR® Sales Tax Holiday.
Look for the ENERGY STAR label while shopping and keep in mind that these items can save you more than $100 a year on energy costs. This year, to help support social distancing, the Texas Comptroller is also including online and over-the-phone orders. These ENERGY STAR items can be purchased tax-free:
- Air conditioners (with a sales price of $6,000 or less)
- Refrigerators (with a sales price of $2,000 or less)
- Ceiling fans
- Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Dehumidifiers
Water heaters, clothes dryers, freezers, stoves, attic fans, heat pumps, wine refrigerators, kegerators, and beverage chillers are not eligible for the tax-free promotion, even if they are ENERGY STAR certified.
Appliances have come a long way in terms of energy efficiency over the past 20 years. When you’re replacing your appliances, remember ENERGY STAR certified products use anywhere from 10-40% less energy than other models, which can add up to significant savings.
Please note: For air conditioners and refrigerators, additional costs like delivery and shipping charges are considered part of the sales price. You can find more details on the Texas Comptroller’s website.
