PEC employees raise $1,260 for LukeStrong
Head shaving event for PEC employee’s nephew a success
For years, PEC GIS Manager Steven Baca has been hosting a fundraiser at PEC to support his nephew’s battle against cancer. This includes lunch and an opportunity to Shave Baca’s head for a donation. This year, PEC employees raised $1,260, which is the most money raised since the event’s inception.
“This year was great!” Baca said. “It was probably the best time we have had at the luncheon, since everyone got a chance to shave my head.”
Baca’s nephew, Luke, has been battling neuroblastoma for over nine years, and has been supported by St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to research cures for childhood cancer. Since 2014, nearly $200,000 has been raised by Team LukeStrong.
Upon arrival to the event, employees were treated with barbecue and dessert, which was donation-based to help raise funds for Team LukeStrong. After lunch was served, attendees gathered around Baca in the loading docks of Building A in Johnson City for the opportunity to take a pair of hair trimmers through his full head of hair. A total of nine employees cut through Baca’s hair, leaving him with a raggedy look before he shaved it off himself later.
“Having my PEC family support this fundraiser for Team LukeStrong has always made me feel proud to work at PEC,” Baca said. “We have quite a few fundraisers that we all support through the year for the co-op.
“I feel like everyone really enjoys this one because they get to eat, as well as support a cure for childhood cancer. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me all these years in this endeavor.”
All proceeds from this event went to Team LukeStrong. Learn more about Luke’s story, and you can make a donation to Baca’s efforts here.
