PEC hosts second annual Camp Save-a-Watt™ Solar Car Derby

More than 70 students from across Central Texas participated

Pedernales Electric Cooperative proudly hosted campers and parents from across the cooperative’s service territory on June 21 for a day of learning and fun at the co-op’s headquarters in Johnson City. More than 150 people, including 70 campers in kindergarten through third grade attended PEC’s Camp Save-a-Watt Solar Car Derby. There, they had the opportunity to learn about solar energy from PEC experts, as well as build and race solar cars. This is the second year PEC has put on the event for campers enrolled in the co-op’s free online summer camp.

“It’s an honor to invite these young students to our headquarters to learn about solar power, electrical safety, and conservation,” said Celete Mikeska, PEC community relations manager.

Those who attended also enjoyed arts and crafts, music, games, snow cones, and an appearance by Camp Save-a-Watt mascot, Wattson Raccoon. Eight-year-old Elijah Pfeifer of Marble Falls finished first in the derby. He received the grand prize trophy, and all participants received a medal for their hard work.

“PEC is proudly celebrating 85 years of powering the Texas Hill Country, and as we look back on our history, we also remain focused on our future,” Mikeska said. “By investing in programs that engage and inspire young students, we hope to keep our communities bright for years to come.”

Camp Save-a-Watt is PEC’s free, virtual summer camp developed and put on by the cooperative’s experts. The program focuses on teaching youth about the importance of saving energy in everyday life, both at home and at school. Through hands-on weekly lessons, students learn about energy conservation, nature, and electrical safety. With the help of parents and teachers, Camp Save-a-Watt can help our youngest members learn important tips to reduce their energy use and help schools and parents save money.
