Free web-based resource available to teachers, parents, and community members
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(JOHNSON CITY, Texas) February 27, 2024 — Pedernales Electric Cooperative is committed to supporting education and opportunity for Central Texas youth. Building upon this commitment and in celebration of National Read Across America Day, March 2, PEC is debuting its new Literary Expedition Library. The free online resource includes a collection of video book readings geared toward students in Pre-K through fifth grade. PEC is sharing this content with members, area schools, local libraries, and after-school programs across the co-op’s service territory to support students in the community.
“We’re proud to add another tool to enrich learning for our youngest members,” said Kevyn Packer PEC community outreach specialist. “Whether at home or in the classroom, our materials are available anytime. We’re thrilled to promote the power of reading and invite our members to engage with us and explore the new digital library.”
In addition to the library, PEC offers a variety of free learning tools for all age groups. The list includes:
- Camp Save-a-Watt™ — PEC’s free, online summer camp for students in kindergarten through third grade.
- Circuit builder — Lessons on the components of electric circuits for third through sixth grades.
- Meet a lineworker — PEC lineworkers visit schools, libraries, and attend community events to share information about their career. Students can meet a lineworker, try on safety gear, and see a bucket truck in action.
- Activity books — Electrical safety educational materials for students in first through fifth grades.
- Coloring sheets — Provides students in Pre-K through second grade an opportunity to learn about electricity while coloring.
For more than five years, PEC has celebrated National Read Across America Day to help foster a love for literacy and inspire young students. The event is the nation’s largest celebration of reading and was established in 1998 by the National Education Association. Teachers and libraries interested in having someone visit their school and read to students in person can request a reader online through the new site.
Members can visit PEC’s Literary Expedition Library and follow the cooperative’s social media channels to learn more.
